the fixx

July 18, 2012

just when the time’s ripe to pull ‘reach the beach‘ off the record shelf and slap it down for a spin, the fixx (‘red skies at night’, ’saved by zero‘, and ‘one thing leads to another’) has kept going strong and matured since their days topping the billboard charts. these blokes rather enjoyed getting caught between thunder, lightning and downpours, passing the time with the same smart, thought-provoking banter found in their lyrics. thanks to rainmaker media group for the connection and quoting p.t. barnum (“without publicity, a terrible thing happens… NOTHING!”), and the helpful vision of a fellow fixx fan james f. kraus.

ps… check out the huffington post article featuring their new music video, ‘anyone else’.

hospital road

August 25, 2011

when kaye contacted the studio for a photoshoot, she said, and we quote:  “I’m pretty sure my CD will be called ‘Wide Open Road’…so I’m going to need, at a bare minimum, a road.  :)”  we took her up on this, but her husband was the location scouting hero here; finding a little-used road in one of the ‘burbs near an old hospital of sorts.  getting up before the crack of dawn isn’t exactly rock & roll but since kaye’s got a little country in her, we were up & at ‘em in the wee hours to catch the early morning mists.  with styling by emily neill of ‘closet smarts’ book fame (yes, we shot that too), and a little coaching from makeup artist elizabeth moon, it was one of life’s simple pleasures to record this visual journey before the nine to five workday officially began.

ghost in the house

August 3, 2011

two weeks ago, i had the pleasure of shooting a house in a heat-wave in akron, ohio. this was the childhood home of songwriter dave crossland, and it had just been sold and emptied by his father after the better part of a lifetime.  images inspire words, and words inspire images.  the result is a visual and lyrical montage, a ghost from the patina of a more innocent time, and the homes i knew as a child.

craig mcnutt

August 2, 2011

craig mcnutt plays big instruments on big stages.  as a percussionist, his performances have taken him as far as paris and frankfurt, but more locally he’s graced the stages of carnegie hall, boston symphony hall, and jordan hall (where he often appears as principal timpanist for the boston modern orchestra project). craig came to our studio to create non-traditional visuals that would appeal to a younger audience, so naturally, we went outside.  we’re excited to see how he uses them on his upcoming website.

long live the king

July 25, 2011

accessibility is a fundamental philosophy of radius ensemble.  step into a performance and experience their diverse repertoire – and their unique ability as a classical ensemble to conjure the king himself.  maybe that’s what they mean when they say ‘reinvigorating classical music for a new generation’?  we aren’t showing that here – just the after-the-show footage – so you’ll have to experience them live to find out what we mean.  and besides, their bold, mysterious postcard recommends that.  long live radius!

for the love of john

May 13, 2011

what john oates didn’t know about liz linder photography is that (rock star) associate photographer mary flatley has been programming our studio playlist for years now, such that we all hum along to hall & oates while working the days away.  as the story goes, mary was listening to ’she’s gone’ the morning a colleague sought her out for a spec shoot at berklee college of music, where john was leading a masterclass on songwriting & the music biz.  she practically jumped at the chance, and the shot that ran in the phoenix captured his eye – he seems to love it as much as we love hall & oates (take a peek and see for yourselves – we think it’s one of the best recent shots out there).  way to go, mary!

mother country

May 5, 2011

in 2008, i spent three days at the kingston trio fantasy camp with dave crossland.  it was a memorable intro to the work of john stewart, and his vast contribution to the american songbook.  to put it bluntly, stewart is THE quintessential folk singer/songwriter; his songs are known by most folks, yet his name is rarely mentioned; consider the monkees’ 1967 hit, ‘daydream believer’.   in 2009 i had the pleasure of connecting crossland with tom polce to produce an album commemorating dave’s musical mentor, american songwriter john stewart.  we produced a video based on the studio session, and crafted a series of stills for the project, aptly called ‘mother country’.  last weekend at the skylight theatre in los angeles, dave previewed the upcoming album with members of the original john stewart band in front of a packed house.  to find out more about this project, visit the site at mothercountry.org.  and an extra shout out to our collaborators on the video; aaron shadwell & abby getman.

katrin

April 8, 2011

some of the best things about shooting musicians are spontaneous front & center performances.  during this shoot on a grey seamless backdrop, katrin delivered a lively rendition of an aptly termed ‘girl-zeppelin’ song.  check her out on youtube to see the live house of blues version.  shoot styled by emily neill.

esperanza spalding

February 14, 2011

esperanza beat out justin bieber fair & square for the title of ‘best new artist’ at this year’s grammy’s.  enough said.  (captured at an early digital music shoot; spring, 2004)

eilen jewel

January 19, 2011

singer/songwriter eilen jewel had a hot minute to refresh her image on a snowy evening in boston between her u.s. and scandinavian tour. with a short get-to-know-you pow-wow (made possible by modern technology) and the help of make-up artist katrina hess, we used one of our speed-sessions to give her a new image that lets her personality shine through.
